eHealth Evolution

"Telemedicine" Today

Today, early adopters of the pioneer telemedicine solutions have “hit the wall” with regards to how far they can push traditional telemedicine technology. The majority of the systems that are deployed today are “single function” devices that focus primarily on basic vital sign monitoring for patients with chronic diseases such as CHF and COPD. Chronic disease patients along with patients needing more complex care require more flexible care programs with “multi-function”, integrated capabilities such as multimedia education programs, the ability to reach a care giver in real-time through videoconferencing, real-time broadcasting of reminders, messages, and alerts, and the ability to interact and collaborate with multiple parties.

Care Providers are also striving to grow their business through innovative applications and services that require integrated, multi-function eHealth solutions. A real-life example from a BL Healthcare customer is remote vital sign monitoring, multimedia education, and integrated videoconferencing to enable remote “wound dressing”. Many of the early telemedicine pioneers are limited in their ability to provide this “multi-function” integrated capability due to underlying technology and architectural constraints. Regardless of the vendor, those companies that are unveiling approaches to provide integrated functionality are in the testing and “pilot” stage with limited commercial deployment.
